Mindfulness apps for kids: how CalmBud compares

Updated 24 August 2026

If you're looking for a mindfulness app for kids, you probably start with Calm or Headspace because you've heard of them. They're good products. They're also built for adults first. This page is an honest look at what each option is for, including CalmBud, so you can match the app to the job.

CalmBud isn't affiliated with Calm, Headspace, Moshi or Smiling Mind. We're a kids emotional-regulation app for ages 6 to 13, with a parent dashboard. We're not a sleep-story library.

Start with the job, not the brand

"Mindfulness app for kids" covers at least four different jobs: falling asleep, learning to meditate, getting through a meltdown, and giving a parent a window into moods. No single app wins all four. Pick the job you need most weeks.

  • Bedtime / sleep stories: Moshi, and Calm's kids sleep content
  • Guided meditation by age band: Headspace for Kids, Smiling Mind
  • In-the-moment calm-down (breathing, grounding, short listens, one-tap reset): CalmBud
  • Very young children (under 6): Sesame's Breathe, Think, Do. Not CalmBud

Calm

Calm is the brand most people mean when they type "Calm" into Google. It's excellent at adult meditation, sleep stories and a huge audio library. Families sometimes use it with older children, especially at bedtime.

It isn't designed as a child-first emotional regulation app. If your six-year-old needs a one-tap reset during a spiral at 4pm, you'll be hunting through an adult product. That's what CalmBud is for.

Headspace for Kids

Headspace splits meditations by age and has a clearer kids offering than Calm. If your child will sit for a short guided session, it's a solid choice.

It's still a library of sits. Anxious kids who won't sit still often bounce off it. CalmBud leans on check-ins, visual breathing, a thought-catching game, and short Calm Listens rather than a long meditation catalogue.

Moshi and Smiling Mind

Moshi is strongest as a sleep and audio world. Smiling Mind is free, used in schools, and a good first try if you don't want a subscription.

Neither gives you a parent dashboard for mood patterns. If you want a shared language with your child plus a behind-the-gate view of check-ins, that's CalmBud's lane.

Where CalmBud is the better fit

CalmBud is for school-age kids who need help in the moment: Magic Breathing, grounding, Thought Detective, short Calm Listens, optional read-aloud, stickers, and a parent dashboard. It's iOS only, ad-free, and built to Apple's Kids Category rules.

Pick someone else if you mainly want a thousand sleep stories, Android, or a school-wide mindfulness curriculum. Pick CalmBud if the problem is big feelings during the day and you want a tool your child can open without a menu maze.

Common questions

Is CalmBud the same as Calm?

No. Calm is a separate, well-known meditation company. CalmBud (also written Calm Bud) is an independent kids app for emotional regulation. We're not affiliated with Calm.

Can I use CalmBud instead of therapy?

No. Use it as a practice tool alongside parenting, school support and clinical care when that's needed.
